The use of colour really stands out too, with a richness and weirdness rarely seen elsewhere. The Downside itself and the various other locations you'll encounter all have their own distinct mood and tone, while the various exiles share an overall aesthetic that denotes their collectively blighted status, but also allows for each clan to be visually distinct. Pyre looks like a fantasy comic brought to life, with a wonderful approach to world and character design. However other forms of sati exist, including being buried alive. Immersion in the world is bolstered further with the fantastic visuals. The best known form of sati is when a woman burns to death on her husbands funeral pyre. The strength of writing and characterisation in Pyre puts many games with far bigger budgets to shame. Some lament their life in the Downside, others have come to accept it, and others even embrace the freedom from responsibility it brings, but few are as they seem. While new characters present as ciphers, the more you talk with them or use them in Rites, the more you learn about their backstories, personalities, and supposed crimes. Even losing a Rite doesn't result in 'game over' – your team will reflect on their losses, discuss their failings and ambitions, and continue their journey, the defeat proving a growing experience that may even draw your clan closer together.īuilding those relationships is a special joy, too. Rather brilliantly, everything is in service to building a story that will be unique to each player.
